Towards a Safe and Healthy Working Environment in North Macedonia is a European Union-funded project implemented by the International Labour Organization (ILO).
The project supports the country’s efforts to ensure that every worker enjoys the fundamental right to a safe and healthy working environment, in line with international labour standards and the process of alignment with the EU acquis.

With a duration of 42 months (2025–2028), the initiative contributes to building a strong, preventive, and sustainable national system for occupational safety and health (OSH). It works in partnership with the Ministry of Economy and Labour, the State Labour Inspectorate, the National OSH Council, the Institute of Public Health, trade unions, employers’ organisations, and other OSH institutions.

The project focuses on four strategic outcomes:

A conducive national OSH framework

supporting the development of a modern, gender-sensitive legal and policy environment through legislative reform, national OSH profile, policy, and strategy.

Stronger labour inspection system

upgrading inspection methods, introducing a digital case management system, and building capacities of inspectors.

Improved OSH information system

developing a unified national platform for recording and analysing occupational accidents, injuries, and diseases.

Enhanced national capacities and culture of prevention

strengthening employers’, workers’ and educational institutions’ role in promoting safety and health, including through OSH education, youth training, and public awareness campaigns.

By promoting prevention, data-driven policymaking, and effective social dialogue, the project aims to reduce occupational accidents and diseases, improve productivity, and build a culture of safety that benefits all workers and employers.
